Notes on a Trip to Ferry Land
Ferry Land Song
As always, we end this series with lyrics for an original song related in some way to the topic.
I thought it might be fun to try something in the genre I call “Make Up Your Own Backstory”. You know, like: “What do you think was going on with Billie Joe and the Tallahatchie Bridge?”
Another and more geographically-appropriate example (pointed out to me by my distinguished cousin) would be the Rufus Wainwright song, “Montauk”. I believe, however, that Mr. Wainwright has made the mistake of explaining its context and meaning.
Regarding the backstory for this song, readers are welcome to submit their own theories.
“I SAW HER ON THE SHELTER ISLAND FERRY” It only takes a minute Park your car but then stay in it It’s slow motion, but it passes like a blur The day was gettin’ late on And she’s put a little weight on But still I’m pretty sure that it was her. I saw her on the Shelter Island ferry For once we both were headin’ the same way I saw her on the Shelter Island ferry So I’m guessin’ that she’s probably OK. Looks can be deceivin’ Was she heading home or leavin’? Is there any chance she caught a glimpse of me? Is she flounderin’ or thrivin’? Does she own the car she’s drivin’? I tried to wave, but guess she didn’t see. I saw her on the Shelter Island ferry For once we both were headin’ the same way I saw her on the Shelter Island ferry So I’m guessin’ that she’s probably OK.

She’s a high school sweetheart he cheated on and he’s regretting his adolescent behavior. But why regretting? Has he continued to make poor choices?
I love that song! Love love love. Tune is virtually writing itself in my head. Great job.
