Dream Song (or actually Two Flying Songs)
As always, we end the series with lyrics to an original song for which you’ll need to imagine a tune. Those brave enough to share their renditions can email an audio or video file to macgouganatlarge@gmail.com. They’ll be posted at a link I’ll share once there’s a reasonable amount of content there.
Thinking about a song for this series, I wanted to get away from nightmares and dreary dreams and focus on the pure joy of the flying dream. I have two very different takes on the joy of feeling like you can fly.
The first is a duet between two young sisters, who may or may not be based on my granddaughters, Anna and Grace.
“NOBODY CAN FLY”
OLDER SISTER: YOUNGER SISTER:
Nobody can fly.
Like I can.
Nobody can fly.
Like me.
Way up in the sky.
Like I can.
Shouldn’t even try.
We’ll see.
It’s such a wonderful feeling
When I float up to the ceiling
I wish everyone knew it
But it looks like I’m the only one who can do it.
Nobody can fly.
Like I can.
Nobody can fly.
Like me.
Way up in the sky.
Like I can.
Shouldn’t even try.
We’ll see.
I’d say her thinking is hazy
Or she’s a little bit crazy
But I’m telling you, Mister
Nobody can fly, and that includes my sister.
Nobody can fly.
Like I can.
Nobody can fly.
Like me.The second song is intended to take you to church. You can hear what tune you like, but I hear this one as an upbeat, hand-clapping Gospel number. I hope you will take something positive from it - whether or not it reflects your own personal faith or worldview.
“IT’S ONLY THE HABIT OF GRAVITY” There’s a secret in this life That should not be ignored If you dig down deep enough You’ll find the joy of the Lord When we have the eyes to see God’s love is all around Then it’s only the habit of gravity That keeps our feet on the ground. Yes, it’s only the habit of gravity That keeps our feet on the ground. When you feel the Spirit move It’s time to sing this song Don’t hold in the joy you feel But pass the joy along When we see an act of grace Or hear a joyful sound Then it’s only the habit of gravity That keeps our feet on the ground Yes, it’s only the habit of gravity That keeps our feet on the ground. Life is full of pain and grief This cannot be denied And we must open up our hearts And let that pain inside But when the crying’s over And we think of all we’ve found Then it’s only the habit of gravity That keeps our feet on the ground. Yes, it’s only the habit of gravity That keeps our feet on the ground. Yes, when the crying’s over And we think of where we’re bound Then it’s only the habit of gravity That keeps our feet on the ground. Yes, it’s only the habit of gravity That keeps our feet on the ground.
