A Quick Trip North - 3
Weekend Visitors’ Song
I like to think that Linda and I are relatively congenial and low-maintenance houseguests. Still, we’re bound to underestimate the disruption we bring to the generous households that invite us.
Since I try to end every series with a make-up-your-own-tune song, I thought this one called for a Questionably Self-Satisfied Moochers’ Song.
(Given the lack of music, I thought it might be helpful to use indentation to differentiate between verses, chorus, and bridge.)
"MAKE YOURSELVES AT HOME"
Such a nice place that you’ve got here
And so nice of you to share it
You will hardly know we’re here
We’d be quite happy with a carrot.
What is it that I’m hiding?
We’re surprised that you just guessed it
A bottle of red wine that we
Had opened just to test it.
But don’t get up
No don’t get up
Just relax and read a poem
As we listen to your hi-fi
While we logon to your wi-fi
Yes, just make yourselves at home!
Just show us to your guest room
We don’t care about its placement
Doesn’t need to be your best room
It could even be the basement.
Tell us, what’s for dinner?
Please don’t go to any trouble
But let’s all have a drink first
Can you please make mine a double?
Would be intrusive if we
Asked about your pre-nup?
We don’t know where to put things
Or we’d help out with the clean-up.
But don’t get up
No don’t get up
Just relax and read a poem
As we listen to your hi-fi
While we logon to your wi-fi
Yes, just make yourselves at home!(Next series: Notes on Secondary Seasons)
