Hawaii Song
As the resident lyricist for this operation, I thought I should end the “Notes from Hawaii” series by writing some lyrics for a Hawaii song. For some reason, the song that came to me is a sad one that bears no relation to my actual experience during my visit - other than the fact that it did occur to me that the seeming perfection of the islands might not seem particularly wonderful to everyone. Maybe it had to do with the disconnect I was feeling between the beautiful setting and the Make America Russia Again political news during our stay, which I found very upsetting.
This song needs a tune that can be crooned - say by Dean Martin in his prime.
BEAUTIFUL HAWAII
I feel a light breeze through the coconut trees This place is almost Eden A tropical beach says that joy’s within reach But it isn’t quite succeedin’. Beautiful Hawaii It’s so beautiful Hawaii Every island is exquisitely fine. Beautiful Hawaii It’s so beautiful Hawaii It’s everybody’s paradise but mine. I’m lost in the crowd and I’m under a cloud As the gentle rollers rock me Cause if I can’t see ya, the sweet bougainvillea Only serves to mock me. Beautiful Hawaii It’s so beautiful Hawaii Every island is exquisitely fine. Beautiful Hawaii It’s so beautiful Hawaii It’s everybody’s paradise but mine. I had my chance, but then stood by Aloha is Hello, Good Bye. Beautiful Hawaii It’s so beautiful Hawaii Every island is exquisitely fine. Beautiful Hawaii It’s so beautiful Hawaii It’s everybody’s paradise but mine.
(Next series: Notes from NYC)

I’m singing it with a slight Irish brogue today!
